Debunking the Myth:

You don’t have to be a dancer to join us at Pure Barre

If you’ve ever heard of Pure Barre, you might imagine you need to be a dancer to join. Well, we’re here to explain that everyone is welcome at our studios! While it’s true that Pure Barre is inspired by ballet, it requires no previous dance experience and is accessible for all fitness levels.

You may be wondering - what is Pure Barre?

Our low-impact, high-intensity group fitness classes benefit all fitness levels, featuring musically-driven choreography for an effective full-body workout that improves strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, and balance. Pure Barre is inspired by a fusion of Pilates, yoga, and strength training movements to strengthen your mind and body.

So why is there a myth that you have to be a dancer?

One common misconception is that Pure Barre is essentially a ballet class. Still, while the movements and the studio may be similar to what you have seen or experienced in a dance class, they offer different purposes for Pure Barre.

The Pure Barre Technique

While ballet exercises and movements have inspired elements of the Pure Barre technique, our classes are structured to enhance physical fitness rather than teach dance. Pure Barre classes are programmed with full-body performance in mind, and both the class flow and specific exercises are designed to target muscle groups uniquely throughout each class. All exercises are modifiable to accommodate all fitness levels, with the goal of making you leave every class feeling empowered and strong.

Part of what makes Pure Barre unique is the fusion of established dance fundamentals with traditional fitness concepts, such as an emphasis on isometrics in our Classic class and the use of heavier dumbbells with dynamic movements in our Define class, to create a cohesive class experience. Both dance and Pure Barre share a common purpose, though, as both emphasize form and alignment of the body to provide benefits for the entire body, making Pure Barre a fantastic way to build muscular strength,

If you are a dancer or simply enjoy dance movements or classes, Pure Barre classes are still tailored for you! Our Director of Training and Technique, David McMahan, explains why dancers love our classes still, you don’t have to be a ‘professional’ dancer either, “Dancers tend to like it because it has a structure and training they can relate to. Our classes are accessible to dancers, but it's not meant for only dancers; it’s meant for everybody.”

Pure Barre Studios

If you have ever seen a Pure Barre studio, it looks very similar to a ballet studio, surrounded by mirrored walls and a ballet barre. The mirrors act as a tool of awareness, allowing all clients to witness their form throughout all movements during the class, helping you hold yourself accountable for adjusting alignment as the burn sets in. The barre is used throughout the class to assist with balance exercises or support more challenging positions.

Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or someone who has never stepped foot inside a dance studio, Pure Barre classes offer a unique and effective workout experience designed to emphasize strength through building stability. The program is equally challenging and adaptable, allowing you to engage with the exercises at your own pace and level. By focusing on personal fitness goals and providing a supportive environment, Pure Barre ensures everyone can experience the benefits of barre.

Overall, you don’t need a dance background to enjoy and benefit from a Pure Barre workout. The technique’s emphasis on fitness, inclusivity, and adaptability makes it accessible to people from all walks of life. So, if you’ve been considering trying Pure Barre but have been hesitant due to a lack of dance experience, rest assured that you’re more than capable of stepping into the studio and experiencing the transformative power of this unique workout.
